Reach Out and Read

What is Reach Out and Read
Reach Out and Read is a national evidence-based early literacy program that partners with pediatric care providers to help families make reading aloud a daily habit, starting at birth. During well-child visits, doctors and nurses give children free, developmentally appropriate books and guide parents on the importance of reading aloud for their child’s brain development and bonding.
Why It Matters:
Reading aloud supports early language skills, strengthens parent-child relationships, and lays the foundation for lifelong learning and school success. Children who participate in Reach Out and Read enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies, stronger language skills, and a greater love of books.
Program Highlights:
-
Serves children from birth through age 5
-
Books are provided during pediatric checkups
-
Promotes family engagement and school readiness
-
Reaches over 4 million children annually through 6,000+ medical clinics nationwide
